Reality TV connoisseurs are used to seeing Kim Kardashian cry about some pretty incomprehensible experiences—for example, losing a pair of $75,000 diamond earrings in the ocean—but there is one breakdown that the 42-year-old credits with making her appear more relatable to her biggest fan: 10-year-old North West.
Of course, North is the eldest child that Kardashian shares with her ex-husband Kanye West. Their other children include seven-year-old Saint, five-year-old Chicago, and four-year-old Psalm. During a recent interview with Vogue Italia, the Skims founder opened up about a vulnerable moment with North that helped her see more of herself in her mom.
Specifically, Kardashian discussed passing the “baby bar” back in 2021, marking her first major step towards becoming a lawyer. “My daughter was there with me,” Kardashian told the publication. “For a long time, it was difficult for her to understand why I was studying all the time. She saw me fail and cry, she saw how I was no different than her when she was worried because of a test.”
Kim Kardashian failed California’s First-Year Law Students’ Examination three times before succeeding. “When [North] saw me cry from joy, I knew she understood how important that achievement was to me personally,” Kardashian continued.

That doesn’t mean the mother of four lets her children witness every emotional expirience she goes through, particularly when it comes to her tumultuous divorce from West. “I think I’m a mix. If it’s something concerning my kids’ dad and I’m upset, I try not to show as much emotion,” she told Vogue Italia. “I have to be ready to explain why I’m upset and it might not be appropriate for them to know. There’s nothing worse than, ‘You’ll understand when you’re older.’ I don’t want to be that person.”
