The latest episode of Secret Invasion confirmed what many fans had already begun to speculate. In the episode, it was revealed that Avenger and high-ranking government official James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes had been replaced by a shapeshifting Skrull.
While the twist fits well within the narrative of Secret Invasion, it turns out that Rhodey’s replacement may have had other effects on the MCU.

Feige Teases a Larger Story
Speaking to Marvel’s official site, Marvel head Kevin Feige teased that viewers would eventually “understand exactly how long he’s been a Skrull.” Adding, “We like the idea of fans going back and watching some of the other appearances of Rhodey and realizing that that wasn’t him.”

According to Feige, the creative team behind Secret Invasion wanted to have an unexpected character be revealed as a Skrull. Luckily, Cheadle was on board with the plan.
“We needed to have a character that one would not expect to be a Skrull.,” Marvel Studios President and executive producer, Kevin Feige, explains. “Don was on board for this reveal of playing and revealing another side of Rhodey and revealing that, yeah, Rhodey has been a Skrull.”

Cheadle Was On Board
Feige stated when it comes to long-standing characters, Marvel wants to make sure they partner with the actors when it comes to story decisions.
“When we have amazing actors, like Don, that have been with us for so many years, we very much treat them as partners in the creative collaboration,” Feige continues. “It was very early days when we pitched this concept to Don, and he very much was into it and into being able to play with different sides of Rhodey that we haven’t seen before.”
For his part, Cheadle was excited to play a version of Rhodey that was not quite what he seemed.
“It’s fun to fold that in and know that that’s what’s happening underneath all of these Rhodey scenes,” Don Cheadle explains. “Rhodes is not who he appears to be.”

With the Skrull cat now out of the bag, it will be up to Fury, and viewers, to figure out when Rhodey was replaced, and how to save the Avenger from his imprisonment.
