A Tourist’s Guide To Love, which hit Netflix last week, is a Josie and the Pussycats reunion — Rachael Leigh Cook and Missi Pyle share the screen for the first time since the 2001 movie — and with all the talk about it, of course I had to revisit the cult classic. Based on the Archie Comics series (and not unlike Riverdale), the movie follows a small-town band, Josie (Cook) and the Pussycats (Tara Reid and Rosario Dawson), as they’re given a big break under suspicious circumstances and slowly realize they’re pawns in a much larger game to use subliminal messaging and influence the youth of America (led with panache by Alan Cumming and Parker Posey). This theme is reinforced through a frankly bizarre amount of product placement that never actually gets old. Josie and the Pussycats is full of great music, and though it’s not exactly critically acclaimed, it is a load of fun — and sometimes, that’s all you need.
