Jennifer Lopez has been seen with a totally wearable new nail shape that her manicurist has dubbed “natural coffin tips.” And yet again, here we are inspired by a J.Lo nail design.
The actor and singer is often creative when it comes to nail shapes, and this year has been no different. Just in March, she debuted ballerina nails. Now, she gives them a small but fine update with these coffin tip nails.
It’s no secret that Jennifer Lopez loves a natural manicure. Whether it’s milky micro French nails or lipgloss nails, subtle polishes seem to be high on the star’s list. As for the nail shapes, J.Lo has long been a fan of almond-shaped nails though the shape has become more angular in recent months. For her current manicure, the base is a nude nail polish but the nail shape itself is quite different from what we’re used to seeing on her.
Over on Instagram, J.Lo posted three selfies of herself that clearly put her nails in the spotlight. And not just from her pose—you can’t miss the golden 3-D stickers, piercings, and gems that make up the nail design.

Behind the look is, of course, Tom Bachik. He’s the celebrity nail artist responsible for just about every manicure the actor has. He also posted the pictures on his Instagram account and described the nail shape as “natural coffin tips.”
So what are natural coffin nails, exactly? The nail shape is a variation of ballerina nails; it’s quite angular and filed straight on the sides at the top of the nail tip. The sides become narrower and narrower towards the top of the nail. Coffin nails can be worn on both short and long nails, which is one reason why the manicure has become so popular. The less the nails narrow towards the top, the more discreet that “coffin” effect turns out to be. In the case of Jennifer Lopez her, it’s very slight—hence the name “natural coffin nails,” because it has a more natural effect.
