Aquaman star Jason Momoa continues to tease his DCU future now that James Gunn and Peter Safran are in charge. Speaking with Men’s Health, Momoa’s role in the DCU is currently unknown, with many thinking that the actor will switch roles from the Atlantean superhero to that of antihero Lobo.
While he does not give too much away, Momoa did state that he is “extremely, extremely excited” about his future with the franchise and teased that “there’s a lot of badass s–t coming up.”
Momoa playing coy with what his DCU future holds is sure to add fuel to the idea of the action star stepping into the big boots of Lobo when filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran take charge of the comic book movie franchise. Rumors of Momoa playing Lobo have been circulating for some time, with many feeling that the actor would be much better suited to the role of the intergalactic bounty hunter.
Further reports have claimed that the reason for Momoa switching roles has come as a direct result of the upcoming DC sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, suffering from some very poor test screenings. Meaning that Momoa’s version of Aquaman would be scrapped in favor of a Lobo project. This is all still mere speculation, but Momoa certainly seems confident that his time with the DCU is far from over.

As well as discussing what lies ahead with the DCU, Momoa also revealed that the studio decided not to follow his 50-page treatment for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which would have involved the superhero “talking to the U.N. about what’s happening with the melting ice caps.” And it seems that shelving his ideas bugged the actor and “spins him into an impassioned, salty riff,” according to the publication.
“That’s the reason why I love directing and creating. I don’t wanna just go like, ‘I’m acting. I’ll be in my trailer.’ I love being able to burn for what I believe in. I’ve seen some of the most shocking acting performances firsthand and watched them edited, and they were amazing. I wish I could tell you who it was. I’m like, ‘What the f–k?’ I watched this guy who had to be f–king propped up. They read the lines to him. But this motherf—er killed it when the edit came in and was applauded for it. At that point, I was like, ‘Wow, this s–t is made in the edit.’”
Despite not using his ideas, Momoa will lead Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom for what remains of the current DC franchise. Directed by James Wan from a screenplay written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry aka Aquaman alongside Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Kidman.
