Jamie Lee Curtis would like to play Doctor Kureha in an upcoming season of Netflix’s adaptation of One Piece.
Nearly five decades into her career, Jamie Lee Curtis can do just about anything she wants. And what Jamie Lee Curtis wants is to join the high-seas adventures of One Piece, the manga adaptation that premiered this summer and has already been renewed for a second season.
Posting on Instagram over the weekend amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike (now well into its second month), Jamie Lee Curtis picked her dream role for One Piece. “ONCE the STRIKE against the greed of the AMTPT is SETTLED with a FAIR CONTRACT, I will lobby along with the growing fan frenzy to become Doctor Kureha in @onepiecenetflix”. The post was accompanied with a series of photos, which you can see below:
So, what are the odds that Jamie Lee Curtis could join One Piece. Actually, it seems like as close to a guarantee as we can get without any contracts signed. Replying to the post, co-showrunner Matt Owens wrote, “Mommy dearest, that’s why we sent you that figure! No need to lobby. Once we get what we deserve and get back to work let’s talk!”
Jamie Lee Curtis has actually been lobbying for a role on One Piece for some time now, posting a manipulated image on X (back when it was called Twitter) that showed her as part of the team. That the official One Piece page posted a crying with laughter emoji got many excited that there was some sort of communication between the two.
Considering One Piece is based on the best-selling manga and comic book series ever, there was a lot of pressure for its success. Fortunately, reviews have been strong (OK, so our own Alex Maidy didn’t love it but did call it a “fun swashbuckler”) and viewership has been great, with nearly 300 million hours watched in its first two weeks.
For those who have yet to get acquainted with the comic or the show, here is the plot: “Monkey D. Luffy is a young adventurer who has longed for a life of freedom since he can remember. Luffy sets off from his small village on a perilous journey to find the legendary fabled treasure, ONE PIECE, to become King of the Pirates!”
What do you think? Could Jamie Lee Curtis be a good fit for One Piece in her desired role? Would she be a welcome addition or would her star power take away from the series? Give us your thoughts in the comments section below!
