Jamie Lee Curtis has her sights set on a specific role on Netflix’s One Piece, and the show’s team appears hopeful about making it happen.
Curtis took to Instagram on Friday to address a growing fan movement pushing for the Oscar-winning performer to be cast as Dr. Kureha in the live-action project. Based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga series of the same name, One Piece focuses on a boy named Monkey D. Luffy and his fellow Straw Hat Pirates amid their quest for the titular treasure.
“ONCE the STRIKE against the greed of the AMTPT is SETTLED with a FAIR CONTRACT, I will lobby along with the growing fan frenzy to become Doctor Kureha in @onepiecenetflix,” Curtis captioned her post.
This led Matt Owens, who is the series’ co-showrunner alongside Steven Maeda, to write in the comments section, “Mommy dearest, that’s why we sent you that figure! No need to lobby. Once we get what we deserve and get back to work let’s talk!”
Curtis followed up her initial remarks with an additional post featuring footage of herself in an media interview to promote 2022’s Halloween Ends. During the sit-down from roughly a year ago, the star pointed out that her daughter Ruby Guest has encouraged her to play Dr. Kureha, a gray-haired doctor on Drum Island.
One Piece launched on Netflix last month and was swiftly renewed for a second season two weeks later. Oda’s statement about the renewal included a hint at the casting process for Dr. Kureha: “From here on, it seems to me the Straw Hats will need a great doctor… We will see!”
