Jamie Foxx had one person on his mind for Juneteenth: his father, George Dixon.
On Instagram yesterday, the Oscar-winning actor and Grammy Award winner shared a heartfelt tribute. In it, he credited Dixon for teaching him how to carry himself as a Black man. “George Dixon has taught me a lot about how to carry myself as a black man,” Foxx wrote. “I am not a perfect black man, but every day I try to gain knowledge… to navigate through the future for me and my family.”
He closed with something simple: “when the elder speak… listen.”
Foxx also tied the message to Juneteenth and Black history. He wrote that he’s “happy and blessed to be able to have the knowledge of my father, be shared with the world about Juneteenth about black history.” It’s a personal tribute, but it lands as something more than a holiday caption.
Foxx is one of the most decorated entertainers of his generation. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2005 for playing Ray Charles in “Ray.” He’s also a Grammy Award winner. He got his start on “In Living Color” in the early ’90s and from there crossed into film and television. Four decades in, he’s still going.
In 2023, he was hospitalized for several weeks after suffering what he later described as a stroke. His recovery was slow and public. He’s been open about gratitude and the people who kept him going. His daughter Corinne Foxx was notably present during that time, and he’s spoken warmly about his family’s role in his healing.
This Juneteenth post fits that chapter of his life well. Foxx has leaned into reflection and family since his health scare, and those themes show up consistently in his public appearances.
The timing also feels deliberate. Plenty of celebrities marked Juneteenth with a general tribute or a reposted graphic. Foxx went personal. He made it about one man and one relationship, and that specificity is what makes the message stick.
George Dixon isn’t a celebrity. He’s not tagged or introduced. Foxx simply put his father’s name out there and let the message speak for itself.
The humility in the wording stands out too. Foxx didn’t say he’s figured it out. He said he works at it every day. Trying to gain knowledge. Trying to navigate the future for his family. That kind of honesty is refreshing to see.
Juneteenth, observed on June 19, marks the 1865 announcement of freedom for enslaved people in Texas. It became a federal holiday in 2021. For many Black Americans, the day centers on family, history, and the passing of wisdom from one generation to the next.
Foxx connected all three. And he made sure his father got the credit.
