DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are almost two years into their work on the new DC Universe, which is rebooting the comic franchise’s biggest names in a massive new story. After Creature Commandos‘ debut on HBO Max in Dec. 2024, Superman became the saga’s first theatrical release in Jul. 2025, introducing David Corenswet as the face of DC’s new cinematic universe. Peacemaker returned for its second season weeks later, and 2026 has since been a roller-coaster with the releases of Supergirl and Lanterns, adding to the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate.
From here, Clayface will close out the year in theaters on Oct. 23, and the rest of the confirmed schedule is light after this new horror movie. After this movie, the only project from the main DC timeline with a confirmed release date is Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow, although Matt Reeves’ The Batman — Part II and the animated Dynamic Duo are both in development as well. Although multiple new movies and TV shows have been teased, none of them currently have release dates, leaving the DCU’s future in the dark. Thankfully, Gunn has confirmed he is not going anywhere anytime soon.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed that he is currently writing his next movie for the DC Universe after the release of Man of Tomorrow on Jul. 9, 2027. Asked by a fan on Threads if he was “ready to write [his] next film yet,” Gunn quickly replied that he was “Already in it.” He added that he had “to do something while [he] was waiting for the assembly,” but he did not reveal any other specific information on which movie he is now writing.
More to come…
