James Gunn Has Discussed The Future of the Guardians of the Galaxy With Marvel

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has largely been marketed as the last ride for the intergalactic team, and the end of a journey that began in 2014.

With franchise director James Gunn set to bolt the MCU for DC, it appeared as if it was the end of the line for the fan-favorite team. But then again, maybe not.

James Gunn Would Be Fine With Future Guardians Films

Although Gunn will clearly be unable to continue with the franchise, the director has previously stated that he would be fine with Marvel continuing the series without him.

“It would absolutely not be disloyal of them to me to continue on in the Marvel Universe,” he said.

Then in response to the question, “Have you had conversations with Marvel about their plans for the guardians now that you’re done,” Gunn admitted he has.

Although the Guardians could theoretically continue on without Gunn, the makeup of the team would surely be different.

Dave Bautista and Zoe Salanda Would Not Return

Guardians stars Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana have previously stated that they have no interest in returning to the film, especially without Gunn. The duo portrayed Drax and Gamora, respectively.

“I’m so grateful for Drax. I love him. But there’s a relief [that it’s over],” Bautista recently said. “It wasn’t all pleasant. It was hard playing that role. The makeup process was beating me down. And I just don’t know if I want Drax to be my legacy — it’s a silly performance, and I want to do more dramatic stuff.”

For her part, Saldana seemed to hint there could be a future for the Guardians.

“I don’t think this is the end for the Guardians. It is the end for me, for Gamora,” Saldana stated.

While Bautista and Saldana may not have any interest in returning to the franchise, Chris Pratt has remained open to the possibility. With that being said, the actor admitted it would be hard to continue on without Gunn.

“It would be strange to continue [Star Lord’s] story without James,” Pratt said. “He’s done such a masterful job in the first three films. We really found the voice of Peter Quill together and without him, obviously, I would never have had this opportunity. He writes it, he directs it, he dreams up the music, it’s his imagination on screen.”

In the end, the future of the Guardians will likely hinge on Pratt’s involvement. After months of touting the franchise’s end, however, it seems as if there may be a future for the Guardians of the Galaxy after all.
