I think its safe to say that Marvel is having a tougher time in a post Avengers: Endgame world.
Whether that be because the films are becoming too formulaic, the VFX teams behind the MCU are being stretched too thin, or the advent of Disney + has created too much content, the fact remains that Marvel is in a pivotal moment.
James Gunn Weighs In
Now, Guardians of the Galaxy director, and current head of the DC Universe, James Gunn has weighed in on Marvel’s problem.
Gunn, who will end his involvement with the MCU after this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, recently discussed Marvel’s Phase Four and Five problems.
“I really want Marvel to keep making good movies. I think it’s really hard in the wake of the Blip. There’s this worldwide, universe-wide event that happened. And in truth, everybody would be stark raving mad at this point. So it’s hard to write stories in the wake of that. Which is why the Guardians movies have been easier, because they’re set outside of that a little bit.” The director noted.
A Lasting Impact
While much attention has been paid to Marvel’s struggles since the advent of the multiverse, or the loss of Captain America and Iron Man, Gunn brings up an interesting point.
The Blip has permeated everything that has happened since Endgame. Whether that by Yelena’s misguided vengeance against Hawkeye, or Monica Rambeau’s journey in WandaVision.
Nevertheless, the days of the grounded, “real world” Marvel movies are over. And perhaps, the universe has passed the point of no return.
