James Gunn Debunks Superman: Legacy Casting Process Rumors

James Gunn debunks Superman: Legacy casting process rumors and clarifies what’s going on with the DC Universe reboot. The Man of Steel is once again getting re-imagined for the big screen. Despite coming back for Black Adam, Henry Cavill’s time as Superman is over. Instead, Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios are prepping a new Superman reboot. With Gunn as the writer, Superman: Legacy will arrive in theaters during summer 2025. Seemingly, Gunn is also directing it, according to DC Universe writer Tom King. However, Gunn and DC Studios have yet to clarify that notion. Superman Legacy will be the film to truly kick off the new DC Universe.

The Superman reboot will focus on a younger Clark Kent and not serve as an origin story. Supposedly, Superman: Legacy will explore the DC hero still being early in his journey as a superhero.

A recent rumor claimed that casting calls for Clark and Lois Lane had gone out for Superman: Legacy. But it didn’t take long for Gunn to debunk the rumor as he clarified that they haven’t even hired a casting director yet. It has yet to be revealed when casting for Superman: Legacy is actually supposed to begin.

Everything We Know About James Gunn’s DC Universe

The Flash movie will be a crucial component for the new DC Universe when it hits theaters this summer. The Barry Allen-centric story will officially reset the DC Universe, clearing the path for new versions of Superman, Batman, and many other characters. There will still be a few DCEU players that carry over into the new DC Universe across TV and film. That includes the cast of Peacemaker and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, as she is getting her own HBO Max show, Waller.

In Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe, they will have not only TV and movies connected but also animated projects and video games. Outside of Waller, HBO Max is currently developing Lanterns, Booster Gold, as well as a Wonder Woman prequel series, Paradise Lost. They also have the animated Creature Commandos show in the works. Whoever gets cast in Creature Commandos will also reprise the roles in the live-action properties. That will also be the case for other animated properties based in the DC Universe.

Outside of Superman: Legacy and the other four announced films, they don’t even makeup half of Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters.” At this point, whoever gets cast as the new Superman will likely be much later in the year. Once the script is completed, that is when casting can get rolling for the Superman reboot. Hopefully, there will be some indication of who is getting tapped for Superman: Legacy by summer at the very latest.
