James Gunn Confirms 'Creature Commandos' Season 2 Release Date

The DCU did not begin with Superman, but instead kicked off seven months prior with the animated series Creature Commandos. Centered on a government task force that uses monsters, the series dropped audiences into the James Gunn-led DCU, offering hints of characters like Batman, the Metal Men, and Sgt. Rock and Clayface. Ahead of the Season 1 finale in January 2025, Creature Commandos Season 2 was greenlit. Now, James Gunn has finally offered an update on when to expect their return.

Responding to a fan on Threads, James Gunn gave a release window for Creature Commandos Season 2. When asked when the series would be released in relation to Man of Tomorrow, Gunn said, “Well, Creature Commandos season 2 won’t be long after. And more stuff as well shortly thereafter.” Gunn did not give a specific release date, but with Man of Tomorrow set to open in theaters on Jul. 9, 2027, Creature Commandos Season 2 will have to be in the latter half of the year.

With no specific release date for Creature Commandos Season 2, there are two likely release windows. The first is August 2027, as both Peacemaker Season 2 debuted that month in 2025, and HBO will do the same with Lanterns this year. There is also December 2027, which would mark three years from when Creature Commandos debuted.

Specific details about Creature Commandos Season 2 remain under wraps, though the Season 1 finale teased a new expanded roster that included The Suicide Squad‘s King Shark, a rebuilt G.I. Robot, and newcomers Nosferata and Khalis. Alien: Earth‘s Sydney Chandler is rumored to be voicing Nosferata. The first episode of Season 2 is confirmed to be titled “Starry Nights.” Gunn has also confirmed that Creature Commandos Season 2 is set after Peacemaker Season 2.

The show’s return debuting in 2027 makes a great deal of sense, given the DCU’s 2026 schedule is already filled. Supergirl will open in theaters on June 26, 2026. It will then be followed by Lanterns, which debuts on August 16 and will run for eight weeks. Shortly after, Clayface will open in theaters on October 23.

So far, James Gunn’s DCU schedule for 2027 includes only Man of Tomorrow and Creature Commandos, though more titles are expected to be announced soon. Possibly a release date for the animated Mister Miracle series or an update on the Jimmy Olsen Daily Planet series? Or could Gunn be referring to the non-DCU-related The Batman — Part II, which opens in theaters on Oct. 1, 2027? Maybe more will be revealed closer to San Diego Comic-Con 2027.
