James Gunn Addresses Peacemaker Season 2’s Status Amid Cancelation Rumors

James Gunn Addresses Peacemaker Season 2’s Status Amid Cancelation Rumors

James Gunn’s appointment as co-CEO of DC Studios has led to many rumors about what is happening with Gunn’s existing DC properties, including the second season of Peacemaker. It seems that although there have been some assumptions made about the possibility that the John Cena series has been canceled in favor of Gunn’s focus on the new DCU slate, the writer-director has made sure everyone knows that Peacemaker will return…just not yet.

Taking to his Twitter account, Gunn responded to a question raised about Peacemaker season 2, and the question of whether it would actually go ahead now considering his change of role. Gunn replied:

“Heck no, just postponed while I work on [Superman:] Legacy. Waller first. [Peacemaker] after.”

The second part of his tweet is clearly in reference to the Viola Davis-led series that was announced as part of the DCU’s first wave of releases. While there is still very little information about what Waller will focus on, Gunn has revealed that it will chronologically take place between Peacemaker season 1 and season 2, which suggests that both Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad will be part of the DCU’s continuity going forward.

What Peacemaker’s appearance in the DCU does is instantly indicate that not all of the projects coming from the new DC stable will be aimed at the all-encompassing family focused audiences that the MCU has strived to please for fifteen years. This is something that Gunn had already suggested previously, and the willingness to produce R-rated content alongside PG-13 offerings could be something that ends up setting it apart from its Marvel counterpart.

Peacemaker Was A Huge Hit On HBO Max Before The New DCU Came Around.

HBO Max

Back in September 2022, James Gunn suggested that Peacemaker season 2 was ready to begin filming. However, the following months saw a lot of changed within Warner Bros. and a complete upheaval of the DCEU as was. While Gunn was already working outside the other DC properties like Justice League, the finale of Peacemaker’s first season featured an appearance by the superhero group. That now has come to be something of a strange portent of the future, with Jason Mamoa and Ezra Miller both appearing in their respective roles as Aquaman and The Flash, while the other Justice League members were left in shadow.

This now seems to have been something that was clearly planned, with Henry Cavill having departed the franchise and Gal Gadot’s future as Wonder Woman a long way from certain. When it comes to the second season of Peacemaker, Gunn hinted last year that there could be a number of connections being made to the rest of the DCU, and that seems to have now become fact. At the time Gunn said:

“I think we’re going to see more connections in some other stuff as we move forward with Peacemaker and other shows at HBO Max. So those [cameos] will keep coming. I don’t know if the Justice League is going to show up in every season of Peacemaker; that might be a one-time thing. We’ll see!”
