We last left Jack Ryan having been betrayed by his own agency, and with nowhere to go, or it would seem. Jack continues to try and prove his innocence in Greece while also trying to find a way a way to stop Sokol, all this while trying to stay alive. In this episode we see him run into an old Ally and an old friend, one things for sure, he’s definitely making new enemies.
The official synopsis for this episode reads “Jack, out in the cold and on the run after the fallout from his failed operation in Greece, must evade authorities both foreign and domestic before receiving help from an old friend.”
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR JACK RYAN SEASON 3 EPISODE 2
Once again the show opens with a flashback, we now know that the General’s second in command, Luka (James Cosmo) who we see looking over the dead bodies inside Matoksa and ordering them killed at the start of the first episode is the older man we saw in the first episode.
We start the episode with James Greer in Rome, he is attempting to send Jack help covertly, and he does so through a local bakery by sending him money, and a message that will get him help in Greece. Meanwhile Elizabeth is gearing up to bring Jack in, and Greer is going along for the ride, and it’s safe to say these two are not very civil.
Meanwhile in Greece, Jack has been laying low, until now. We first see him tailing the hitman who killed Yuri, and in true Jack Ryan fashion, he tries to get a picture of him, he succeeds, but gets caught in the process. Resulting in a chase throughout the streets of Greece. Jack then loses him in a local fishmarket.
As soon as he’s safe, we see him send a text to an unknown number reading “The scientist is dead, you lied to me,” further deepening the mystery of what exactly happened with Yuri and why he died.
Luka tells the new defense minister, Alexi Petrov (Alexej Manvelov), “someone, is playing a very dangerous game,” he tells him he think the Americans are innocent and that the assassination was a lot closer to home. He has no idea how right he is.
When Greer and Elizabeth arrive in Greece, they meet the chief of police and who should be standing right next to him, but the blonde hitman who killed Yuri and is hunting Jack, Konstantin Vyatkin. Now we get a clearer picture at exactly what kind of person Jack and Greer are dealing with. The police think Jack killed one of their own and have issued a red notice for his arrest, but Greer is determined to find him first.
After Jack finally retrieves the money Greer sent him, and the address of a place he could go next, he manages to send out a secret message to an old friend. When Jack finally makes it to garage at the address Greer sent him, he realizes it belongs to Tony (Numan Acar), the smuggler who he punched in Season 1 . Despite this, Tony still hid Jack when when Greer and Elizabeth came knocking and when Konstantin came tearing the place apart with the cops. Thanks to him we have a better understanding of who Konstantin could be. When Tony explains that around Greece, he gives the orders, especially to local police, Jack figures out he must be GRU, and he comes to the realization that whoever gave the order to kill Yuri is probably military.
While Petrov is speaking to Luka, he brings up Jack Ryan, he goes on to say This American intelligence officer has proven to be more relentless than expected, he asks for his help. Now keep this in mind, as it proves to be incredibly important towards the end of the episode.
Soon after we see Jack take Tony’s truck to an airfield outside of Greece, where he meets up with that old friend of
his, Mike November (Michael Kelley) from season 2. He flies Jack out to Santorini, Greece.
Remember everything that happened this episode? Well I sure hope you do. Cause here comes the major reveal. When Mike November asks Jack “So you gonna tell me what the fuck you’re sitting on, or do I have to guess?” It begs the question, has there been more to this all along, was this more than just about being burned by the CIA? Who is Jack’s source?
We see Jack send one last text message, and it is answered by none other than Luka himself! Luka even received the previous text from Jack. The question now is, how did Luka end up as a source for the Americans? Who ordered Popov’s murder? And who ordered Yuri dead?
This season has a lot more political intrigue than the one’s before, but unlike season 1 and 2, season 3 sees multiple different storylines taking place, and it’s all connected. Each episode furthers this conspiracy more, and at the middle of it all is Jack Ryan. If you want to watch a really thrilling action packed film, with both drama and hints of comedy, that is spread out across 8 hours, this would be be it.
Jack Ryan season 3 is now out on Amazon Prime.
