Insomniac Leaks Reveal The Details of Disney’s Relationship With PlayStation

Spider-Man 2 Game

As part of the larger Insomniac Games leaks, which saw 1.7 TB of data released online, fans got a glimpse into the future of Marvel gaming.

As part of the leaks, fans were excited to hear that Marvel and Insomniac have plans for a Venom standalone game, a Wolverine game that is allegedly similar to the Spider-Man games, and a future X-Men trilogy of games.

Each Title Needs To Sell 6 Million Copies

Perhaps more interesting, however, was the revelation that Sony must sell at least 6 million copies of Marvel titles, or either party can terminate the deal.

If Playstation terminated the contract, Marvel would be able to ask for a $9 million penalty. On the flip side, however, if Marvel terminated the agreement, the fee would be waived.

If the second hypothetical were to occur, Insomniac would not develop any more Marvel games, but they would be allowed to continue selling previously created games.

The parameters of the agreement could explain why Sony often bundles Marvel’s Spider-Man game with councils.

Sony Will Invest $621 Million in Marvel Titles.

Per the Insomniac leaks, Sony will invest approximately $621 million in the marketing and development of upcoming Marvel titles.

In return, Marvel will release the games exclusively on PlayStation. The leaked games must be released by 2034, with the sales completed by 2038. If the games prove successful, Mavel could extend their contract with Playstion.

Interestingly, the X-Men licensing terms also leaked, revealing that Disney would receive 9-18% of digital sales, 19-26% of physical sales, 19-26% of DLC sales, and 35-50% of bundle sales.

For the foreseeable future, Disney will continue to rely on licensing to prop up its gaming business. By the sound of things, however, Diseny’s partnership with Sony is here to stay.
