In addition to being Mrs. Marvel, Iman Vellani is known for being something of a Marvel super-fan.
After starring as Kamala Khan in her own DIsney+ series last year, Vellani is now getting ready to team up with Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Monica Rambeau (Tyonah Parris) for The Marvels.
As it turns out, Vellani hasn’t quite gotten used to being a Marvel star yet.
Hiding From Samuel L. Jackson
On her first day of filming with costar Samuel L. Jackson Vellani literally hid behind director Nia DaCosta before emerging to pepper him with questions.
When asked if he answered all of her inquiries, Jackson laughed.
“Of course I did,” he said.
A Marvel Expert
Still, when the cast of the The Marvels needed to a comic expert, they turned to Vellani.
“I’ve just learned to trust Iman because she really has her timelines in order,” says Brie Larson. “She’s the one that’s always schooling us. I wouldn’t know how old Carol is without her. She really does the math.”
“I just say things with enough conviction,” Vellani deadpans, “and they believe me.”
Bringing Comics To The Big Screen
On the set of The Marvels, Vellani wasn’t the only Marvel comic nerd on set. Director Nia Dacosta grew up reading the Marvel comics, to the point that she had to tone things down on set.
“The biggest challenge was finding the balance between my point of view as a director and as a comic book nerd,” DaCosta admits. “Obviously, there are changes between the comics and the movies, and sometimes I’m like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa!’ Sometimes Kevin [Feige] would be like, ‘You’re being too much of a nerd. Please stop.’”
The Marvels will land in theaters on November 10.
