The How to Train Your Dragon franchise has captivated audiences for over a decade with its heartwarming tale of friendship, bravery, and the unbreakable bond between a Viking named Hiccup and a dragon named Toothless. Since its onscreen debut in 2010, the saga has expanded into a trilogy of blockbuster films, three TV series, and nine short films, collectively earning over $1.6 billion at the global box office, based on the books by Cressida Cowell.
Universal Pictures recently unveiled the first teaser trailer for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, directed by Dean DeBlois, who helmed the original animated trilogy. In what appears to be a faithful, shot-for-shot reimagining of the 2010 classic, the teaser showcases breathtaking visuals, the emotional bond between boy and dragon and a cast poised to bring the cherished characters to life in a whole new way.
Mason Thames (The Black Phone) takes on the role of Hiccup, the awkward yet determined Viking who refuses to follow his tribe’s dragon-slaying traditions. Joining him is Nico Parker (The Last of Us) as the fearless Astrid. The cast also features Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick the Vast, along with Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Ruth Codd, and others.
The teaser offers a glimpse into pivotal moments from the film such as where Hiccup lifts his dagger to kill a bound Toothless but can’t bring himself to do it, fans of the original will recognize the scene when the bond forms between himself and toothless, we then see the scene where Hiccup turns his head away from Toothless and pets him for the first time. His gentle nature changes the course of Viking history.
DeBlois, who co-wrote and directed the original “How to Train Your Dragon” films alongside Chris Sanders, returns as writer-director for the live-action adaptation. Working alongside producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, he aims to retain the magic and emotional depth that made the original a modern classic.
While some fans may question the necessity of a live-action remake, the teaser hints at the potential to expand the world of Berk and its dragons in brand new ways. The dynamic landscapes, intricate costume designs, and lifelike portrayal of Toothless promise to bring a fresh yet familiar experience to audiences.
The How to Train Your Dragon franchise is no stranger to critical and commercial success, having earned four Academy Award nominations and a dedicated fanbase spanning generations.
