House of the Dragon season 3 & 4 prep is underway

The first trailer for the second season of House of the Dragon dropped over the weekend, but work is already underway on what will be seasons 3 and 4 of the HBO series.

George R.R. Martin took to his blog to write about a recent trip to London, which included a visit to the studio where House of the Dragon was shot. “I also spent two days locked in a room with Ryan Condal and his writing staff (Sara Hess, Ti Mikkel, David Hancock, and Philippa Goslett) talking about the third and fourth seasons of HOUSE OF THE DRAGON,” Martin wrote. “They were lively, fun discussions, and we got some good work done… though two days was not nearly enough. There is so much ground to cover that I am not sure twenty days would have been enough.

Earlier this year it was reported that the creative team was planning for House of the Dragon to last somewhere between 3 and 4 seasons, so it makes sense that they would be mapping out a complete arc. George R.R. Martin added that he also viewed rough cuts of the first two episodes of House of the Dragon‘s second season.

The highlight of the trip, though, had to be the sneak preview that Ryan gave me of the first two episodes of HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, season two. (Rough cuts, of course),” Martin wrote. ” Of course, I am hardly objective when talking about anything based on my own work… but I have to say, I thought both episodes were just great. (And they are not even finished yet). Dark, mind you. Very dark. They may make you cry. (I did not cry myself, but one of my friends did). Powerful, emotional, gut-wrenching, heart rending. Just the sort of thing I like. (What can I say? I was weaned on Shakespeare, and love the tragedies and history plays best of all).” Martin added that he also got to see the sets for the Red Keep and Dragonstone at Leavesden Studios, which he called “huge, stunning, and so damned real that I felt as if I had gone through a time portal to medieval Westeros.

House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a Targaryen history book which chronicles the history of House Targaryen, starting off with “Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and [going on] to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold the throne, all the way up to the civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons, that nearly tore their dynasty apart.House of the Dragon season 2 will debut on HBO in summer 2024.
