Horrifying moment man plunges down a ravine when ‘astronaut training chair’ suddenly falls apart while he is being spun around

  • Horrifying footage showed man fall at the Cabrapta viewing point in Peru
  • Astonishingly the man survived the fall despite being rushed to hospital

This is the terrifying moment a man plunged down a ravine when an ‘astronaut training chair’ suddenly fell apart while he was being spun around.

The video starts off with the man strapped into the seemingly safe chair on the side of a ravine at the Cabrapata viewing point in Ayacucho, Peru – but it soon ends up with him cheating death.

At the beginning, the person filming can be heard laughing and joking as he watches the operator spin his friend on top of the cliff with panoramic views across Peru.

But as he continues to be twisted around, the chair’s frame begins to wobble and without warning suddenly tumbles over the cliff edge.

The laughter in the background soon turns into a panicked scream as the man’s friend disappears from sight.

The camera cuts away as the man falls down the steep incline – as concerned onlookers fear for his life.

Fortunately, the man survived the fall, possibly because the frame he was strapped to protected his head, according to local media.

He was rushed to hospital but is now said to be recovering.

The chair is a budget version of the state-of-the-art Multi Axis Trainer used by space agencies to teach astronauts how to survive high-speed spins in weightless conditions.

The cliffside viewing point is popular with tourists for its spectacular views.

Extreme rides and walkways have sprung up on the beauty spot to cash in on thrill-seeking tourists who expect theme park safety standards.

Officials are now cracking down on all of them over safety fears and have closed them down pending safety checks.

Ayacucho, southeast of Peru’s capital Lima, has had a tumultuous few months prior to this incident.

In December, ten people were killed during clashes with the ouster of former president Pedro Castillo after he tried to illegally dissolve Congress to avoid an impeachment vote he feared losing.

He was voted out of office shortly after and arrested for alleged ‘rebellion’. He denies the charges.

His arrest triggered an outpouring of anger at the country’s political elite and Congress, widely reviled as corrupt and self-serving, especially in Peru’s poor southern mining regions where rising food and energy costs have hit people hard.

Protesters tried to take over the city’s airport, which was defended by Peru’s police and army, but ten were gunned down and several more were injured.
