Following months of speculation, the DCU has found its new Superman in Pearl and The Politician star David Corenswet. The casting of Corenswet, alongside The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, has now been confirmed by writer, director, and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn himself. But, what do Superman fans, and Man of Steel star Henry Cavill fans, think of the decision? Well, they have taken to social media to let us all know…
Some have already criticized the casting of Corenswet, paying particular attention to the actor’s close resemblance to Henry Cavill. Something which director James Gunn was reportedly had no problem with.
But really, can an actor cast as Superman be criticized for looking too much like Superman? Many certainly don’t think so…
Overall, fans of Henry Cavill’s iteration of the Man of Steel continue to be dissatisfied with the way the actor, and the character, were treated during much of his time in the red cape. And, however, you might feel about the DC movies he starred in, it’s difficult to argue that much of it was wasted potential.
David Corenswet Will Lead Superman: Legacy
Known for roles in the likes of Pearl, The Politician, We Own This City, and Hollywood, David Corenswet will see his star launched into the stratosphere when he takes the lead in Superman: Legacy, which will reboot the DC icon and kick-start James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU.
“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas,” the official synopsis for Superman: Legacy reads. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Alongside Corenswet as Superman aka Clark Kent, it has also now been confirmed that Emmy Award winner and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane in the Superman reboot. The casting process for the iconic pair has been going on for months, with Corenswet beating out the likes of The Great and Mad Max: Fury Road star Nicholas Hoult and Grantchester’s Tom Brittney, while Brosnahan was up for the role of Lois Lane against Sex Education’s Emma Mackey and Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor.
Superman: Legacy will be written and directed by Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad filmmaker James Gunn, who recently revealed the qualities he looked for in his Man of Steel. “It’s hard, but we’re looking,” Gunn said earlier this year. “And we actually have some really great choices, which I’m excited about. But it has to be somebody who has all of the humanity that Superman has, but he’s also an alien. It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has. And it has to be somebody that you want to give a hug.”
Superman: Legacy is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.
