EXCLUSIVE: Ahead of season 1’s release, Lanterns‘ future has already seemingly been revealed.
Lanterns continues the live-action legacy of DC’s Green Lanterns. The first member of the Green Lantern Corps to show up in James Gunn’s DC Universe was Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner in 2025’s Superman. Since then, the hero has appeared in Peacemaker season 2, and will next be seen as an exciting addition to Lanterns‘ cast of characters. However, the show’s main stars are Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart. Given the wide range of stories those two have appeared in the comics, the HBO series could go on for many seasons, and we have an update on Lanterns‘ future.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan at the show’s red carpet premiere, Lanterns co-creator Damon Lindelof shared that the writers’ room for Lanterns season 2 has seemingly already started under Chris Mundy. The Ozark showrunner co-created Lanterns alongside Lindelof, who DC fans will recognize from HBO’s Watchmen limited series, and DC Comics writer Tom King, but Mundy is Lanterns‘ sole showrunner. According to Lindelof, if Lanterns ends up being a successful series for DC and HBO, there are a lot of possibilities for how the show could go on beyond just season 2. “If it’s successful and people love it, there’s a lot of runway to launch into future seasons. But I think Chris Mundy has already started a new writers’ room, figuring out what new stories could be for Lanterns.”
