HBO Max’s Gordita Chronicles, Prime Video’s The Wilds Canceled

HBO Max’s coming-of-age comedy series Gordita Chronicles and Prime Video’s YA Lord of the Flies-like series The Wilds have been canceled.

The former reflects HBO Max’s decision to move away from live-action kids and family programming in its “immediate future,” an HBO Max spokesperson told Deadline in a statement.

“We are heartbroken by the larger programming changes at HBO Max that will not allow our special show that is Gordita Chronicles to have a second season at its original home,” executive producers Eva Longoria and Zoe Saldaña said in a statement. “As producers and storytellers who are continually seeking out the authentic and original stories that highlight our community’s joy and talent, we are so proud to have worked on this piece of magic.”

Gordita Chronicles told the story of Cucu Castelli, a reporter who recalls her upbringing in the 1980s as a willful and reluctant “gordita,” or chubby girl, whose family immigrates to Miami, FL, from the Dominican Republic.

Meanwhile, Prime Video did not provide a reason for the cancelation of The Wilds after two seasons. The series followed a group of teenagers stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash, unaware they were subjects of a social experiment.

Despite its cancelation, Deadline reports Prime Video remains committed to young-adult content. Recent YA content includes The Summer I Turned Pretty, The Boys Presents: Diabolical, Invincible and the upcoming series Shelter.
