While Hayley Atwell is currently topping the box office with Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, Marvel fans will always recognize her as Peggy Carter.
Atwell joined the MCU for 2011’s Captain America The First Avenger, before getting a chance to flesh out her character in two seasons of Agent Carter.
Atwell would get to portray a different variant of Carter, one who assumed the mantle of Captain America instead of Steve Rogers, when she lent her voice to the Disney+ series What If…?
Captain Carter In Multiverse of Madness
A long-time fan-favorite character, fans were thrilled when yet another variant of Captain Carter appeared in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
A member of the powerful Illuminati, Captain Carter stood alongside her fellow variant superheroes in an attempt to stop Scarlet Witch from causing havoc.
While fans were delighted to finally see a live-action version of Captain Carter, that joy was short-lived. Just as quickly as Atwell appeared on screen, her character was easily defeated by Wanda Maximoff.
A “Frustrating Moment”
In a new interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Atwell opened up about her role in Multiverse of Madness, calling the cameo a “frustrating moment.”
“I’m like, ‘That wasn’t my choice!’” Atwell said about Captain Carter being mercilessly killed off not long after being introduced. “When she was like, ‘I could do this all day’. And then followed by she’s immediately cut in half by a frisbee. And the audience being like, ‘She can’t do it all day. Apparently you can’t, so, egg on your face.’ That doesn’t really serve Peggy very well.”
Atwell went on to explain that her voice role in What If…? was a far more rewarding experience than Multiverse of Madness.
“I felt like I had much more to do in the What If…? animation series,” Atwell said. “I mean, any actor will tell you, to be able to go into a booth in effectively your pajamas and do an animation is great fun because you’re focused on the voice as the instrument and your main performative tool…[by contract], it felt like a frustrating moment in Strange.”
Could Atwell Return?
Atwell was understandably disappointed in her character’s Multiverse of Madness story. Hopefully, however, this is not the last we have seen of Captain Carter. With a second season of What If…? on the horizon, Atwell may get a chance to do Peggy Carter justice.
