Reports of Marvel Studios’ demise may have been overstated after all. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 once again topped the box office this weekend, adding another $60.5 million to its domestic return.
More importantly, the third entry in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise was able to avoid the second-week plummet in ticket sales that have plagued MCU films in a post-COVID world.
Ticket sales for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 dropped 49% debut putting it behind only Black Panther (45%) and Thor (47%), among the MCU’s 30 films for the lowest dropoff.
Since the pandemic Marvel offering such as Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor: Love and Thunder all declined by nearly 70% in their second weekend.

Strong International Numbers
Internationally, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has now crossed the $300 million mark. The third entry in the franchise has now crossed the half-a-billion mark in just 10 days, bringing in a total haul of $528.8 million.
Overseas, the film has now passed the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, even while being denied the Russian market.
Unlike Marvel’s previous release, Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been praised by fans and critics alike.
Disney will count on that word of mouth to continue to propel Guardians forward. The film will face increased competition, Fast X will hit theaters next weekend, followed by The Little Mermaid on May 26.
