The best action franchise from genre icon Gerard Butler is back for a new streaming follow-up. Beginning back in 2013, the Has Fallen franchise introduces one of Butler’s most no-nonsense action heroes, Secret Service agent Mike Banning, who, with an assortment of weaponry and a sense of unwavering duty, has fought to defend both the United States and the world from all manner of destabilizing threats.
However, when this latest threat comes around, Butler himself is nowhere to be seen. At least, not in front of the camera. The actor instead takes on executive producer duty for the new spin-off series Apollo Has Fallen, which picks up after the events of 2024’s hugely well-received Paris Has Fallen, which has now unleashed an explosive first trailer ahead of its streaming debut.
“The threat is global, the mission is personal,” as returning heroes Zara ( Ritu Arya) and Vincent (Tewfik Jallab) return for an explosive new installment in the Has Fallen series. From the Libyan coast to the streets of Madrid, this new heart-pounding thriller and the latest outing in the beloved action series promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats and guessing until the very last moment. In this highly anticipated edge-of-your-seat action thriller, fearless MI6 agent, Zara and ex-protection officer Vincent return for their most explosive mission yet. After a daring hijack spirals into a shadowy conspiracy, the duo must confront ruthless mercenaries and their own harrowing pasts, all the while unsure exactly who they can trust. While a deadly virus threatens to decimate Europe, Zara and Vincent are pushed to the edge – facing betrayal, heartbreak, and impossible choices. With countless lives hanging in the balance and the clock ticking, can they outwit the brutal mercenary leader Yuri Mishkin, or will his insidious plan for chaos succeed?
Released in the latter part of 2024, and created by Howard Overman, Paris Has Fallen transports the action to the French capital and follows Tewfik Jallab (Squad 36, Blood Coast) as a protection officer who teams up with Ritu Arya’s (The Umbrella Academy) MI6 operative to stop a terrorist group led by Jacob Pearce, played by Mission: Impossible villain Sean Harris. While the series may lack the reliably gruff demeanor of Gerard Butler, the spin-off was met with rave reviews from critics, landing a score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Based on the trailer, which reunites the charismatic leads for another adventure featuring close-combat tactical action that’ll have you flinching, Apollo Has Fallen is likely to follow in its predecessor’s well-received footsteps.
As for Butler’s future with the franchise, following both Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen, director Ric Roman Waugh took over the series for 2019’s Angel Has Fallen, with a fourth sequel, Night Has Fallen, initially expected to film back in 2023. However, since then, the next Banning-led outing has stalled, with the filmmaker stating recently, “I don’t think either one of us wants to jump back into that saddle unless we can really raise the bar emotionally along with the action.”
While we may be left waiting for Night Has Fallen, the CANAL+ Original Creation Apollo Has Fallen is coming soon to Canal+ in France and where available, 
Hulu in the US and Prime Video in the UK.
