EXCLUSIVE: Deadline can reveal the evocative first trailer for Fridtjof Ryder’s debut feature Inland, co-starring Mark Rylance, Rory Alexander and Kathryn Hunter, ahead of its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.
Set in the cathedral city of Gloucester, the drama follows a lost, young man (Alexander) who returns to his old life following the disappearance of his mother and a spell in a psychiatric unit.
Rylance plays a father figure who takes the young man under his wing.
Guided by this guardian and other old friends who care deeply, the young man’s journey through the dreamlike spaces of rural England brings him face to face with the loss that haunts him in ways he could never have expected.
Oscar-winning actor Rylance will also be at the LFF this year with Luca Guadagnino’s Bones And All as part of the ensemble cast, led by Camille DeAngelis and Timothée Chalamet.
Ryder describes his debut feature as “a modern folktale” tapping into English folklore around the Green Man, a mythical figure symbolizing the cycle of nature. At the same time, the film also takes inspiration from the cinema of David Lynch and his films such as Eraserhead and Blue Velvet to haunting effect.
The film is produced by Henry Richmond, Louis Paine and Ryder under the banner of their Gloucester-based company Black Twist Films.
The feature debuts in the Dare section of the BFI LFF’s 2022 selection.
