EXCLUSIVE: Here’s your first look at COUP!, a period satire starring Peter Sarsgaard and directed by Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman.
Set on a seaside estate in the United States during the 1918 Spanish Flu, the pic follows a Progressive journalist (Billy Magnussen) and his socialite wife (Sarah Gadon) who hire a mysterious grifter (Peter Sarsgaard) as a private cook.
Synopsis reads: When the plague descends on the posh island, the family and staff find themselves cut off from society and, like castaways, struggling to survive. The new cook sees an opportunity to rouse his colleagues to re-think their stations and have the run of the mansion for themselves. Their employer suspects the cook’s coup is part of a far more sinister agenda. It is not long before the mind games between master and servant breed an all-out war for dominance over the home. Social restraints crack apart. And civility gives way to animal instincts that lurk beneath.
Sarsgaard (The Batman, The Lost Daughter, Dopesick) stars alongside Billy Magnussen (No Time To Die, The Many Saints of Newark, Game Night), Sarah Gadon (Upcoming Ferrari, Maps to The Stars, Enemy), and Skye P. Marshall (Matlock).
COUP! is produced by Brian Levy for Entertainment 360, Warner Davis and Todd Friedman at Hemlock Circle Productions, and Molly Conners, Amanda Bowers, and Jane Sinisi for Phiphen alongside Harris Gurny. Executive producers include Fabien Westerhoff, Magnussen via his Happy Bad Bungalow banner, and Sarsgaard.
London and Paris-based production, finance, and sales company Film Constellation is handling world sales on the pic. This film will close Venice Days on Sept 9.
