The first look at Nicole Kidman’s return to the DCEU has just been revealed in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom‘s first full trailer.
In the first Aquaman film, Kidman plays Atlanna, the Queen of Atlantis and also the mother of Arthur Curry (Aquaman), played by Jason Momoa.
Joining Kidman in returning roles from the first film is Amber Heard’s Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta, and Patrick Wilson’s Orm.
New Look at Nicole Kidman in Aquaman 2
Nicole Kidman’s Atlanna is shown briefly throughout the new trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
The first glimpse gives fans a clear look at her flowing hair, crown, and textured white (or light blue) suit.
Now a grandmother (confirmed by Curry’s baby in the trailer), Atlanna shares an emotional moment with her son.
She tells him “The trident’s dark magic is spreading.” This is a reference to the black trident introduced in this trailer that Black Manta is now wielding.
Another zoomed-in look at Kidman shows her in action underwater, riding through the current. As fans from the 2018 film remember, the former Queen of Atlantis is a badass warrior in her own right.
This final high-action image of Atlanna is from the teaser trailer that released on September 10.

How Big is Nicole Kidman’s Role in Aquaman 2?
Atlanna represents the connection to the ocean Arthur has had for his entire life, with his father, Temuera Morrison’s Tom Curry, owning and operating the Amnesty Bay lighthouse.
With Black Manta threatening all of Curry’s family, this of course includes Atlanna, as well as his half-brother Orm.
Director James Wan recently said that Aquaman 2 is a “bromance action-adventure movie” focusing more on Arthur and Orm, rather than Arther and Mera like in the first film:
“So, the first was a romance action-adventure movie, the second one is a bromance action-adventure movie. We’ll leave it at that.”
Considering the adversarial relationship between Arthur and Orm in the first film, Atlanna could play a key role in keeping them together.
In addition, Atlanna has vast knowledge of Atlantis, its history, and the surrounding oceans. Based on her first bit of dialogue from the trailer, her role will likely involve helping Arthur discover the best way to defeat Black Manta.
Aquaman is now streaming on Max and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits theaters on December 20.
