First Look At Brendan Fraser In Awards Contender – Deadline

A24 has dropped the first trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale ahead of its December 9 release in the U.S.

The heart-warming tale stars Brendan Fraser as a reclusive English teacher living with severe obesity, who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter, played by Sadie Sink.

A24 has homed in on the moment in the film when Fraser’s Charlie utters the film’s underlying message of “people are amazing.”

The Whale has been riding a wave of warm sentiment ever since its world premiere in Venice to an extended ovation, from where it went on to equally enthusiastic welcomes in Toronto and London.

Fraser is seen as a front-runner in the Best Actor category of the Academy Awards.

In the meantime, he kicked off awards season in Toronto as the recipient of the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance and is also set to receive the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s American Riviera Award in February 2023.

The Whale is based on the acclaimed play by Samuel D. Hunter and also stars Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins and Samantha Morton.

Aronofsky told the Deadline Studio in Toronto that he spent 10 years searching for the right actor to play Charlie in The Whale, describing the process as the “biggest hurdle” of making the film.
