Amber Heard’s Mera made her first appearance in the newly released Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom teaser trailer.
Following the public defamation case between Heard and her ex-husband Johnny Depp, the actress is now surrounded by controversy with her role in Aquaman 2 seemingly being at risk.
However, it was reported that Heard’s role would still be significant as Mera in the upcoming sequel. In 2018’s Aquaman, she co-starred alongside Jason Momoa where Mera was given a lot of screentime.
First Look at Amber Heard in Aquaman 2
Amber Heard was briefly seen in the brand new Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom teaser as her character, Mera, is (barely) seen running towards a house on fire from a wide angle.
Below is a closer look at Mera in action, running towards the blazing home.
One key detail about his first look is that it appears that Mera is in a similar greenish suit from the first Aquaman film.
A new blue suit was recently revealed that the aquatic hero would be wearing in Aquaman 2.
Heard recently said that “there’s a ton of pressure on these big franchise movies” with lofty expectations from the studios like Aquaman 2:
“There’s a ton of pressure on these big franchise movies, with millions and millions of dollars at stake, and compromises are part of trying to make it the most successful thing it can be.”
How Big is Amber Heard’s Role in Aquaman 2?
Despite the optimism that Mera is going to play a key role in the next Aquaman, it’s unsurprising that Warner Bros. (WB) is keeping her in the background of the first teaser trailer.
Many potential audience members aren’t fans of Heard following the revealing trial against Johnny Depp.
Many were vocal online, calling for boycotts against the movie with the “#boycottaquaman2” hashtag after it was reported that Mera saw an expanded role in a 2022 test screening of Lost Kingdom.
It will be fascinating to see how Warner Bros. handles Mera in that upcoming marketing push leading up to December 20.
The first full trailer for Aquaman 2 will be released on Thursday, September 14, where it’s likely Mera will be given a closer look.
It’s been surprising to watch how long WB has waited to begin marketing for Lost Kingdom, especially considering the first film grossed over $1 billion worldwide.
However, Aquaman 2 is now set to be the final DCEU film before James Gunn’s new DCU kicks on in theaters with Superman: Legacy on July 11, 2025.
In addition, there doesn’t appear to be much confidence in the quality of the second Aquaman film, as it reportedly underwent a series of reshoots earlier this year.
So it should come as no surprise Aquaman 2 set the DCEU record for the shortest window between the release of a film’s first trailer and its theatrical release date.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits theaters on December 20.
