EXCLUSIVE: French actress Déborah Lukumuena broke out at home and internationally for her performance in 2016 Cannes Caméra d’Or winner and Netflix acquisition Divines.
The actress makes her English-language debut at Sundance in acclaimed U.K. writer and director Adura Onashile’s feature debut Girl.
Lukumuena stars opposite big-screen debutant Le’Shantey Bonsu as a conflict-traumatized woman who tries to create a safe haven for her eleven-year-old daughter in Scotland.
The pair take solace in their gentle but isolated world but as the daughter grows older, she wants to explore beyond its boundaries, forcing the mother to confront her past.
Warsaw-based New Europe Film Sales, which boarded sales on the title late last year, has released a touching clip encapsulating the mother and daughter’s relationship ahead of the film’s world premiere in Sundance’s World Dramatic Competition early next week.
Nick Shumaker at Anonymous Content is co-repping North America.
Established Glasgow-based theatre actress and director Onashile (Expensive Shit) wrote the screenplay and directs.
Rosie Crerar and Ciara Barry at Glasgow-based company barry crerar lead produce with the backing of the BFI, BBC Film and Screen Scotland.
The feature was developed by BBC Film, after initially being part of the iFeatures programme, supported by Creative England, BFI and BBC Film. BBC Film also previously co-financed Onashile’s award-winning short Expensive Shit.
