Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive for a minimum of three months.
The publisher announced on Thursday that the second part in its Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy will be released on February 29, 2024, on two discs.
The release date announcement trailer also confirmed that the game will “not [be] available on other formats at least until 05.29.2024”.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released for PS4 in April 2020. An upgraded version of the game, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, arrived on PS5 in June 2021 before hitting PC six months later..
Given Rebirth only has a three-month PS5 exclusivity period, it’s possible PC players might have a relatively short wait to play the sequel, which isn’t coming to PS4.
It was announced last month that Final Fantasy 14 will finally be released for Xbox consoles in 2024, following a decade of PlayStation console exclusivity.
During a subsequent interview with IGN, Xbox boss Phil Spencer wouldn’t be drawn on whether other PlayStation exclusives like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 16 will also come to Xbox, but he said the Japanese publisher’s commitment to Microsoft‘s consoles was “really important”.
Following last night’s release date announcement, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth creative director Tetsuya Nomura revealed where the game ends.
“Although there are some changes in the order of the locations, the locations depicted in this title extend up to The Forgotten Capital, where the greatest fate of Final Fantasy VII awaits you,” he told the PlayStation Blog.
