Film That Lit My Fuse – Deadline

Miramax Presents The Film That Lit My Fuse is a Deadline video series that aims to provide an antidote to headlines about industry uncertainty by swinging the conversation back to the creative ambitions, formative influences and inspirations of some of today’s great screen artists.

Every installment asks the same five questions. Today’s subject is Diego Luna, who came out of Mexico with a breakout turn in Alfonso Cuarón’s Y Tu Mama Tambien to become a major star in both English- and Spanish-language films. He is currently creating Emmy buzz for Andor, continuing the character he originated in the Star Wars blockbuster spinoff Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and reprised in the Disney+ series.

The son of a theater, film and opera set designer, Luna found his way to the stage by age 7, and followed with turns in telenovelas and films in Mexico. Films came next after he teamed with Gael García Bernal in the road-trip coming-of-age drama Y Tu Mama Tambien. His star has been rising since, not only for acting but also directing and producing, the latter through Canana Films, a company he launched with Bernal and Pablo Cruz. Canana has produced dozens of Mexican film and TV productions and also director Cary Fukunaga’s breakthrough Sin Nombre, as well as the acclaimed Miss Bala and other films. Here, Luna explains the formative influences that have helped him find his hyphenate path.
