Fifth Justice League Hero Joins Superman Legacy, James Gunn Casts Former DC Actor In New Role

Superman: Legacy casting is far from over, with Anthony Carrigan boarding the DC Universe movie as another Justice League hero, Metamorpho. The new DC Universe is on its way from James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are serving as co-CEOs of DC Studios. The first major movie is currently in the works, Superman: Legacy, featuring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel.

It turns out that Superman: Legacy’s hero recruitment isn’t over yet, as THR has revealed Anthony Carrigan has been tapped to play Metamorpho. This isn’t the first time the Barry star has portrayed a DC character as Carrigan also played Victor Zsasz on FOX’s Gotham and The Mist on The CW’s The Flash. James Gunn tweeted confirmation of Carrigan’s casting:

“I am unbelievably excited for Metamorpho,” Gunn wrote, before adding, “and this opportunity to work with Anthony Carrigan.” The news comes only a day after the casting of Green Lantern and more heroes in Superman: Legacy.

Created by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon in January 1965, Rex Mason, aka Metamorpho, has been a long-time member of the Justice League, as well as other notable teams in the DC Universe. Rex’s history begins when he was aiding Stagg Enterprises CEO, Simon Stagg, in finding the Orb of Ra. However, Simon tried to have him killed when he found out that Rex was dating his daughter, Sapphire.

When Rex gets exposed to a radioactive meteorite, he becomes a powerful metahuman, the Element Man, better known as Metamorpho. Rex gains the ability to shape-shift into elements and is basically invulnerable whenever he is in an alternative state. Superman: Legacy will mark the hero’s live-action debut after having appeared in numerous DC animated projects.

With the addition of Metamorpho, Gunn continues to show how different Superman: Legacy will be in comparison to past Superman movies by really getting an early start in showcasing his new DC Universe. Time will tell when more casting will come for Superman: Legacy, given that a potential SAG-AFTRA strike is looming. Hopefully, Gunn will have more characters ready to reveal for Superman: Legacy before the year is over.
