Quentin Tarantino is ready to start filming his final film. Here is what we know about it so far.
Endings are inevitable. As filmmakers, we often get to close the curtains on projects with a bang. That’s exactly what beloved filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is doing with his final directorial film.
For the last three decades, Tarantino has written and directed some of the most influential films in Hollywood from Pulp Fiction to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Tarantino is ending his directing career with his final project, The Movie Critic.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, details about the film are being kept in a well-protected suitcase, but sources “describe the story as being set in late 1970s Los Angeles with a female lead at its center.”
Here is everything we currently know about the film.
What is The Movie Critic About?
There is a strong possibility that the film focuses on the story of Pauline Kael, one of the most influential movie critics of all time. Kael was a critic for The New Yorker magazine, an essayist, and a novelist whose witty, biting, sharply focused, and highly opinionated reviews changed the landscape of Hollywood.
Kael is a highly respected figure in Hollywood, with many filmmakers like Warren Beatty and Tarantino, a well-known lover of all things revolving around 1970s cinema, which makes it even more likely that Kael or someone who resembles the essence of Kael the focus of Tarantino’s final project.
Who Is Starring in The Movie Critic?
As of right now, nobody has been reported to be tied to the project, not even a beloved alum of Tarantino’s previous films.
With the screenplay currently looking for a studio to call home – with Sony being the likely choice due to Tarantino’s relationship with Sony Picture’s Chairperson Tom Rothman – it’s unclear what the project will look like until more details are released.
There is a likely chance that frequent collaborators like Samuel L. Jackson and Christopher Waltz may make an appearance in the film, but it is too soon to tell what the future of The Movie Critic looks like.
Why is The Movie Critic Tarantino’s Final Film?
The filmmaker has been adamant about making ten feature films.
He declared his philosophy about directing in 2012 when he told Playboy, “I want to stop at a certain point. Directors don’t get better as they get older. Usually, the worst films in their filmography are those last four at the end. I am all about my filmography, and one bad film fucks up three good ones.”
Tarantino continued: “I don’t want that bad, out-of-touch comedy in my filmography, the movie that makes people think, ‘Oh man, he still thinks it’s 20 years ago.’ When directors get out-of-date, it’s not pretty.”
After his ninth film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, released in 2019 to rave reviews from critics and fans alike, Tarantino declared that his next project would be his last. The filmmaker will more than likely stay busy with his family, screenwriting, novel, and essay writing as he steps away from the film camera. There are talks that Tarantino may direct limited series and plays in the future. We will keep our eyes and ears open for any news of Tarantino’s next directing adventure, and let you know as soon as we hear about it.
While this may be the last hurrah for the auteur, we should celebrate his celebration of film history with his modern twist on things. With his last film ready to start filming in the fall of 2023, we should gear up to give one of our favorite filmmakers one hell of a send-off as he says what he has to say about the movie-making, watching, and criticizing business.
