Emmy Comedy Series Contenders: ‘Abbott Elementary’ or ‘Ted Lasso’?

The Emmys’ outstanding comedy series category is a close race to the finish line, and with exceptionally hilarious shows like “Abbott Elementary” and “Ted Lasso,” it’s hard to see who will come out on top. TV editors Emily Longeretta and Michael Schneider discuss their predictions for Variety’s Awards Circuit, presented by Showtime.

Last year, ABC and Quinta Brunson’s “Abbott Elementary” took home the Emmys for best casting, supporting actress (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and writing in a comedy series. “We need to reiterate, this is a broadcast show,” said Longeretta. With 22 episodes a season, the show is a frontrunner that required a hefty amount of material and time to put together.

Hulu’s inaugural season of “The Bear” is another serious contender this year. It takes a darker approach to comedy than “Abbott,” and even teeters on drama. “It’s on the line between comedy and drama, as are some of these other shows in contention,” said Longeretta. “I get a little anxiety watching it but I also laugh out loud multiple times while watching it.”

Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” and Peacock’s “Poker Face” feature strong female leads with Selena Gomez and Natasha Lyonne, respectively, and are great comedies that center around mystery and crime. On an even darker note, HBO’s “Barry” written by and starring Bill Hader is getting its last chance at Emmy nominations after winning nine awards over the last four seasons.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is another comedy series in its final season. “[With] this ensemble, of course, all of whom are Emmy favorites, there’s more opportunities to give an award to one of these folks like Alex Borstein,” said Schneider.

And of course, no one can forget about the reigning champion of the Emmys, “Ted Lasso,” which took home the Emmy for best comedy series two years in a row and has the potential to do it again.

Of all these shows and more, Variety’s editors hope to see a few land on top. Longeretta hopes “Dead to Me” gets its flowers while Schneider wants the poignant but funny “Reservation Dogs” and “Mo” to take home some wins.

Variety’s Awards Circuit is presented by Showtime FYC.
