Searchlight Pictures has unveiled the first teaser for Poor Things — a new film based on the same-name 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray, on which Emma Stone has reteamed with director Yorgos Lanthimos of The Favourite.
The film, slated for release on September 8th, has the Academy Award winner playing Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael and Christopher Abbott also star in the pic penned by Lanthimos’ regular collaborator Tony McNamara (The Favourite). Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe produced for Element Pictures, along with Stone and Lanthimos.
Poor Things is set to open against Warner Bros’ horror thriller The Nun II and Focus Features’ My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. Other films coming up for release by Searchlight Pictures include Eva Longoria’s directorial debut Flamin’ Hot, which on June 9th will become the first title to debut simultaneously on Hulu and Disney+, as well as their Sundance acquisition Theater Camp (July 14), the Taika Waititi-directed soccer dramedy Next Goal Wins (November 17) and Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams (December 8) starring Jonathan Majors.
