Oh, Dua Lipa, the power that you have over my wardrobe…
Have you ever been so torn between wearing a midi skirt or trousers to work that you said, “to hell with it, I’ll wear them both!” Me neither, which is why I’ve been skeptical of the “skirt pants” trend that’s been percolating among fashion editors, celebs, and style influencers for the past few seasons.
The divisive trend first crossed my desk when Jennifer Lawrence stepped out in Paloma Wool’s sheer sarong-style version of the piece last summer, pairing the flowy garment with a cool oversized T-shirt and strappy sling-backs. Kendall Jenner later wore a similar style with flats to Paris Fashion Week.
I was intrigued, but not convinced the cost-per-wear on such a trendy and sheer piece made sense for my budget. However, the opaque, fall-forward skirt trousers beloved by high fashion designers and street style experts seemed difficult to style for my casual, out-of-office lifestyle.
The question wasn’t exactly, “Can I pull these off?” but “Would I really wear these more than once for the ‘gram?” Then I saw Dua Lipa step out in New York City wearing a pair of skirt-pants so effortlessly that I was instantly sold.
