A24 has dropped the first trailer for Dream Scenario, the surreal A24 comedy starring Nicolas Cage that broke out of the Toronto Film Festival as one of the buzziest titles of the fall season. Counting Square Peg’s Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen and Tyler Campellone amongst its producers, the R-rated title is slated to debut in theaters November 10th.
Cage stars as Paul Matthews, a hapless family man who finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. But when his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom.
Marking the English-language debut of Norwegian writer-director Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself), the film also stars Julianne Nicholson, Michael Cera, Tim Meadows, Dylan Gelula, Dylan Baker, and Kate Berlant. In addition to Beau Is Afraid filmmaker Aster, Knudsen and Campellone, producers include Jacob Jaffke and Cage.
In his review of the pic out of TIFF, Deadline’s Pete Hammond praised its “inspired comic premise” — what amounted to him as “perhaps the most ingenious screen idea Woody Allen never had.”
“Nicolas Cage, after more than 100 credits, finally has his dream role, at least as comedy fans are concerned,” said Hammond. “He knocks it out of the park.”
Continued our Chief Film Critic, “What is remarkable is how Borgli is able to stretch out what is essentially a one-joke premise into a 101-minute film without letting the soufflé go flat — no easy task…Comedy has been an endangered species in Hollywood of late, but if Dream Scenario is any indication, it could come back with a vengeance if the right talents got their shot. Borgli is certainly one of them.”
