No updates on the new DC Universe’s Chapter 1 Suicide Squad spin-off, Waller, are to be expected any time soon, according to James Gunn. Before becoming DC’s creative chief, Gunn was the writer and director of 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Characters from the movie will come back in the rebooted DC Universe, with the announcement of John Cena’s Peacemaker season 2 and that members of Peacemaker’s team will show up in the Waller series on Max, which will see Viola Davis return as Amanda Waller.
On Threads, Gunn was asked by a fan for a Waller update, and Gunn revealed that will not happen any time soon.
Another fan commented, “Don’t expect that during the writing and acting strikes,” with Gunn echoing that message by using a pointing emoji. The Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes have led to several movies and shows being delayed, and with no end in sight, it is hard to imagine when work on Waller will be resumed.
James Gunn Hits Back At Emilia Harcourt Criticism
In another reply on Threads, Gunn hit back at a user’s criticism regarding Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt.
Gunn and Holland, who are married, have had to endure constant unsavory comments from those who believe Harcourt’s growing role across DC projects is related to the actress’ personal connection to Gunn. The DC Universe’s creative chief responded with a “Yes” and an eye-roll emoji in agreement with another user who pointed out the hole in the theory regarding Gunn’s alleged plans of favoring Harcourt at DC.
The original user believes that Gunn is “destroying the legacy of amanda waller just for [his] wife.” According to the user’s theory, Gunn intends to phase out Amanda Waller in the comics, later replacing Davis’ role as the character in DC’s movies with Holland’s Harcourt. However, there is a clear issue with that theory, with another user pointing it out by saying, “isn’t a waller max series scheduled to premiere before peacemaker season 2?” Which Gunn then reconfirmed is the case.
Harcourt could make an appearance alongside other characters from Peacemaker in the Waller series, but the show will focus on what Davis’ Amanda Waller is up to in the new DC Universe. Both characters should be working together in the show, with Harcourt’s Justice Society tease in Shazam! Fury of the Gods‘ post-credits scene, with her and John Economos recruiting the hero for the team, working in Amanda Waller’s favor, as she is Harcourt and Economos’ boss. When Davis returns in Waller, it is possible that her character will control the Suicide Squad and the Justice Society, making Amanda Waller more powerful than ever before.
