It’s difficult to overstate the impact The Mandalorian had on the Star Wars franchise when it first debuted back in 2019. A flagship title of the all-new streaming service Disney+, the series marked the first live-action TV series set in a galaxy far, far away. With the series premiere, we met “Baby Yoda,” who has become one of the biggest breakout characters of the decade. It’s safe to say the series was a success, as it spawned two subsequent seasons, while also inspiring spin-offs and building confidence in more live-action Star Wars programs.
Not everything that The Mandalorian or Grogu touches is a certified success, however, as confirmed by the movie they headlined this year. The Mandalorian and Grogu is the first big-screen outing for Star Wars since the divisive Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and one of the biggest questions we had heading into its release was why it deserved to be a movie as opposed to a streaming project. Based on the underwhelming critical and financial response to the movie, that’s a question Lucasfilm is likely still wondering themselves.
There is still plenty more to these characters, though, and the all-new LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian will explore a lighter side of the bounty-hunting duo. A new trailer for the special has been released by Disney, which teases just some of the excitement in store for us.
Like other LEGO Star Wars specials, this upcoming event will put a lighthearted and satirical spin on some of the most iconic moments from the storyline. The franchise itself has always appealed to audiences of all ages, though with The Mandalorian series focusing on a bounty hunter, it’s at least somewhat more adult-skewing than something like Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This new special, however, will once again be geared towards audiences of all ages, potentially allowing it to be the first exposure younger viewers have to Din Djarin.
Funny enough, the upcoming special debuts on Disney+ the same day that The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives on the platform. Even with its underwhelming critical and financial reception, with one of the biggest apprehensions being why audiences should pay for a theatrical narrative for a previously streaming series, the movie’s availability on Disney+ could see it earning a lot more attention. In that sense, the tide could turn on the overall response to that outing, implying long-term success as opposed to Disney hoping for short-term triumphs.
Still, word is out on what the future of The Mandalorian might be, as reports claim plans for a Season 4 were reimagined into the movie. Given the project’s underwhelming reception, it’s hard to imagine this definitively being the end of the line for the concept, but it might be quite some time before we see Grogu in his own narrative.
