When Disney announced that it would be removing content from streaming services Disney+ and Hulu, fans worried that they would soon no longer have access to their favorite shows.
Earlier this month shows such as Big Shot, Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and the Mysterious Benedict Society have been removed from Disney+, in addition to the popular documentary series Prop Culture and the cult favorite — Willow.
While these shows had their devoted fan bases, they were largely Disney+ original shows that failed to gain momentum.
The First Marvel Series Removed
In a surprising move, however, Disney has also removed a Marvel property from the streaming series.
Fans will be sorry to hear that Marvel’s Runaways has officially been dropped from Disney+.
While a Marvel property, the show was actually a production of Hulu originally, before moving to Disney+ when that service launched in November 2019. Two more seasons of the young adult drama were added to the platform in January 2020. Runaways was then canceled after its third season.
Originally conceived as a motion picture, Runaways was eventually developed by the now-defunct Marvel Television. The show centered on six former friends who learn that their parents are members of an ancient society. The teens eventually learn that they have superpowers, which they use to fight.
While not technically part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Runaways received praise from critics for its tone, characters, and storytelling.
The First Domino To Fall?
The removal of Runaways will surely bring into question the future of fellow Marvel Television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Inhumans, and Cloak & Dagger.
For now at least, Runaways is the only Marvel-related property to be dropped by Disney’s streaming service. What that means for the future, remains to be seen.
