Disney Finds ‘Harry Potter’ Replacement With Trailer for New Fantasy Series

The Wizarding World is gearing up for a massive revival as HBO prepares to release its highly anticipated Harry Potter series. The upcoming reboot aims to deliver a book-accurate adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s literary saga, bringing the world-famous story to a new generation of viewers – but those viewers will not be short of options when it comes to choosing their next fantasy obsession. Disney has been busy developing its own spellbinding universe to rival the Boy Wizard’s empire, looking to capture the same magic with Coven Academy, a new supernatural series clearly designed as a direct answer to the Harry Potter phenomenon.

Disney has unveiled the first trailer for Coven Academy (shared below) to give audiences a better idea of what to expect from the new series. Set to the high-energy needle drop of Oliva Rodrigo’s hit song “Brutal,” the footage transports viewers into the corridors of an elite boarding school for the mystically gifted, nestled in the haunted heart of New Orleans, where three teenage witches and their charming warlock peers face deadly secrets, dangerous powers, and forbidden romance while ancient forces threaten their city.

Switching out Harry, Ron and Hermione, Coven Academy is led by a fresh young cast of rising stars, including Malina Pauli Weissman, Malachi Barton, and Jordan Leftwich. The talented trio step into the magical spotlight in their respective roles as Briar, a fiercely independent witch, Jake, a dangerous warlock, and Sasha, one of their mind-reading peers, per Deadline. They are joined by fellow students Tegan, a time-bending witch played by Ora Duplass, and Ollie, a newly turned vampire played by Louis Thresher, as well as faculty members Tiffani Thiessen as Miss Graves, the school’s glamorous headmistress, and special guest star Devon Sawa as Mr. Cole, a brilliant warlock professor who helps to usher in the new era of supernatural academia.

Created by Tim Federle, Coven Academy is seemingly engineered to serve as a modern heir to the Wizarding World, though it evidently leans into a darker, more mature, and grounded fantasy style that will appeal to both young adults and a fresh generation of genre fans looking for a fresh spin on the magical school trope. It trades the cozy nostalgia of Hogwarts for the gothic halls of Crescent Veil, with a spellbinding story that appears to blend the dark mysteries of Wednesday with the sharp teen angst of The Vampire Diaries.

Disney’s Coven Academy is set to premiere on Freeform on Oct. 1, 2026, with the full season dropping the next day on Disney+, Hulu, and Freeform on Demand, allowing viewers to binge-watch at their leisure. The strategic fall release positions it just ahead of Harry Potter, which HBO and Warner Bros. have officially slated for Dec. 25, 2026, offering audiences a chance to discover a new magical universe before the holiday season arrives and everyone’s focus shifts back to the decades-long saga of “The Boy Who Lived.”
