“Deadpool & Wolverine” is a Celebration of All Things Marvel

Deadpool and Wolverine”, the year’s most anticipated film which signifies the comeback of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and the team up we have all been waiting for since he first starred alongside Ryan Reynolds in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” in 2008, the film which gave Reynolds his superhero start, has finally made it to screens, and it has delivered.

With Deadpool in the MCU, of course things were going to get intresting, and when were told Deadpool would be mixing with the Time Variance Authority (From Loki), of course that meant we were in for something good. The film sees Deadpool trying to escape his superhero past. But his peaceful existence unravels when the MCU’s TVA – the group entrusted to balance the dizzying multiverse timelines – finds itself out of control. Its corporate stooge Mr Paradox, played by Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), tries to covertly recruit Deadpool to help safeguard the central “sacred” timeline of reality by sacrificing his world. Refusing, he drags a begrudging, living, Wolverine from an alternate timeline into his in a bid to save the day. This however sends the two to a place they need to escape from in order to save reality from collapsing.

However, aside from simply serving as Deadpool’s glorious entrance into the MCU or Wolverine’s triumphant return, what makes this film great is that it takes us on a nostalgic rollercoaster that pays tribute to every aspect of Marvel, not just the glamorous parts that get all the spotlight but also taking into account the Fox universe and everything it brought us.

The raunchy humour and fourth wall breaking was a given but what we did not excpect was this film to be so emotional, especially in the final few minutes, when we see a whole new side of Deadpool, and a new angle of Wolverine too. With the Disney and Fox merger behind them, we get to enjoy Deadpool commenting on the past, present, and future of Marvel Studios at every chance he gets. What’s great about Deadpool, as we have seen in the past, is that he never takes himself too seriously, and this film is like a breath of fresh air in the MCU. With it’s well placed humor, absolutely on point jokes and Reynolds’ comedic timing, Marvel demonstrates that they can still take a step back from their usual formula and laugh at themselves once in a while.

Reynolds and Jackman were at their absolute best in this film. With the endless action and banter, this film really finds itself at pique comedy levels when the two are together onscreen. With decades of Marvel Studios content to pull from, you never know what will come out of Deadpools mouth next, Reynolds was armed to the teeth with hilarious, dirty and weird jokes, whilst a pissed off and drunk Logan who just wanted some quiet was stuck next to him. So you can imagine how that went.

When it came to villains, it’s only fitting that these two mutants face off against a psychic with connections to the great Charles Xavier, and Emma Corrin (The Crown) who plays Cassandra Nova does a fantastic job in her MCU debut, playing just the right amount of powerful and chilling. Corrin managed to stand out in film surrounded by more famous faces because of their memorable performance as Cassandra Nova, despite having a short run onscreen making for a great MCU villain.

In an exceptional display of nostalgia and surprise, the film treats audiences to a series of remarkable cameos, which of course made for one of the most exciting parts of the film. There are quite a few jaw dropping moments that will have audiences screaming in cinemas. Just as Reynolds said, nothing has been speculated or guessed, and no one will be able to guess these.
