In 2022, reports surfaced that Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy would be entering a galaxy far, far, away and helming his own Star Wars movie.
Deadline originally reported that Levy would start on the project when he completed his work on the fifth season of Stranger Things and Marvel’s third Deadpool installment.
Levy Gives an Update
With Stranger Things now in the rear-view mirror, and Deadpool 3 under production before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Levy’s next project could very well be Star Wars.
In fact, according to the Free Guy director, development on his Star Wars film was underway when the WGA strikes began this spring.
“We were just starting the process of developing my movie, and the writer strike happened. So we are in that holding pattern that so much of our industry is in,” Levy revealed.
It Could Be A Long Wait
Interestingly, Levy’s Star Wars film was not one of the three upcoming titles revealed by Lucasfilm earlier this year.
Those films include a Dave Filoni-headed film that will bring together characters from The Mandalorian universe, a Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed film that will see Rey Skywalker rebuild the New Jedi Order, and a James Mangold film about the Dawn of the Jedi.
While it is good to hear that plans for Levi’s film are still in the works, it doesn’t seem like we will see his Star Wars vision anytime soon.
‘Deadpool 3’ Delay Could Impact Levy’s Star Wars Film
As previously mentioned, Levy was set to start working on the film in earnest after the release of Deadpool 3. While that film is still scheduled for a May 3, 2024 release, production was shut down in July.
With no end to the Hollywood strikes in sight, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Deadpool 3, along with a slew of other films, delayed.
