Summary
- The inclusion of Damian Wayne as Robin in The Brave and the Bold poses a major risk to the film and the DCU’s iteration of Batman, as casting and writing for young actors can be challenging.
- Director Andy Muschietti’s previous experience with an ensemble cast of teens in It Chapter One proves that he can handle young actors excellently, making him an excellent match for directing Damian Wayne in The Brave and the Bold.
- Muschietti’s work on The Flash, which featured two iterations of Batman and showcased epic action scenes, suggests that he is well-equipped to accurately depict Batman and Robin on film in The Brave and the Bold.
The DC Universe version of Batman will debut in the forthcoming The Brave and the Bold, whose announced director bodes well for the film. Batman is DC and WB’s most successful superhero in cinemas, with Ben Affleck due to be recast in the DCU, which is a soft-reboot of the old DC Extended Universe. This upcoming iteration of Batman will co-star with the Damian Wayne version of Robin in The Brave and the Bold, which has been described by James Gunn as a “father and son story.”
The Brave and the Bold is still quite early in development, but Andy Muschietti has been confirmed as the film’s director. Muschietti, who is known for the It duology, directed his first superhero film in the old DCEU. His film, The Flash, was a loose adaptation of Flashpoint, telling a tragic and emotionally resonant story centering on Barry Allen, yet the film also celebrates DC’s history of film and TV adaptations, featuring both the Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton iterations of Batman, due to its multiversal premise. While the movie itself was controversially received, Muschietti’s directorial experience suggests that one risky element of the upcoming DC movie release will be handled well.
Damien Wayne Is The Brave And The Bold’s Biggest Risk
Damian Wayne’s Robin will co-star in The Brave and the Bold, which, while exciting for those familiar with the Batman comic mythos, poses a major risk to the film and the DCU’s iteration of Batman writ large. Damian, like the previous Robins, will presumably be a teenage crime fighter, yet young actors can be quite challenging to cast, write for, and direct. Previous film iterations of Robin, such as Chris O’Donnell’s Dick Grayson in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, simply use adult actors and reimagine Robin as an older character. If Robin is handled poorly, the entire DCU version of the Batman mythos could be tarnished.
Andy Muschietti Has Succeeded With Young Actors Before
Thankfully, Andy Muschietti has already directed a film with an ensemble cast of teens: 2017’s It Chapter One. In addition to being a major critical and commercial success the film also proves that Muschietti can direct a cast of young actors excellently, with Damian Wayne likely being a comparable age to the characters of It Chapter One. Moreover, Muschietti’s direction in 2023’s The Flash proves that he is also an excellent directorial match for Batman himself.
With two iterations of Batman and a plethora of action scenes involving them, The Flash did a phenomenal job of depicting the Dark Knights in vehicle chases, brawls, and all-out battles pitting Batman against Kryptonians. Moreover, The Flash showcases Batman working alongside other heroes, an aspect of the Batman mythos that will certainly be present in The Brave and the Bold, which could potentially include more members of the Batman Family than just Batman and Robin. Andy Muschietti’s work on It and The Flash bodes well for The Brave and the Bold, which will tackle the risky endeavor of depicting an authentic Batman and Robin on film.
