DC Studios has revealed more plot details about its highly-anticipated upcoming Batman spin-off.
Directed by Arthur Mintz, Dynamic Duo will explore the early years of the first two Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Its script will be penned by Matthew Aldrich, Scott Neustadter, and Michael H. Weber. As of June 2026, no casting announcements have been made.
At the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, it was revealed that the animated film “follows Jason & Dick as [a] duo of street rats who name themselves the dynamic duo” (via Discussing Film). Additionally, more details on how Dick and Jason’s friendship will be tested were revealed: “The duo split up as Dick ends up joining Batman while Jason joins the Red Hood gang.“
This description marks a departure from both characters’ comic origins. Dick was previously a circus performer who was orphaned as a result of a tragic trapeze accident and taken in as a ward by Bruce Wayne/Batman. Meanwhile, Jason’s backstory has received a few rewrites since his divisive debut, death, and resurrection.
Initially copycatting his history from Dick as a former acrobat, Jason is now depicted as the son of an incarcerated thief and an overdose victim who meets Batman when he is caught stealing tires from the Batmobile. Interestingly, this means that the versions of Dick and Jason in Dynamic Duo, both described as “street rats,” will have more in common with Jason’s comic iteration.
Notably, despite both characters being hotly anticipated to join the DC Universe, Dynamic Duo will not be canon to the broader franchise, unlike its fellow Batman spin-off, Clayface. When asked about the possibility, DC Studios boss James Gunn simply said, “nope.”
Despite this, the DCU will feature one of the Robins in its main continuity. Damian Wayne will make his big screen debut in The Brave and the Bold, though that film has yet to receive a release date or any casting announcements.
Though Damian will be the primary Robin of the DCU, that does not mean the others won’t appear in some form. Given that Damian is the youngest among the brothers, it is likely that if he is Robin, Dick and Jason will already be Nightwing and Red Hood. Regardless, Dynamic Duo offers a promising opportunity to let the first two Robins shine while stepping outside the traditional DC canon.
Dynamic Duo will release in theaters on June 30, 2028.
