David Harbour discusses Red Guardian’s future in the MCU and hopes for his character’s next appearance.
David Harbour‘s Red Guardian was a standout character in the 2021 Marvel film Black Widow. Now, he’s set to return in the upcoming movie Thunderbolts, a highly anticipated movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe featuring a group of antiheroes and ex-villains who work together to achieve their goals. The movie’s cast includes some big names, such as Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Wyatt Russell, among others, and it’s been suggested that the movie will introduce significant changes to the Marvel franchise. Harbour hinted at this in a recent interview with The Playlist, stating that Thunderbolts will “drop a bomb” on the universe.
Harbour also discussed his character’s future in the upcoming Thunderbolts film. He expressed his desire to see Red Guardian become more of a “badass” in his next MCU appearance. Harbour believes that his character’s fighting skills, which we saw a glimpse of in the fight against Taskmaster, can be explored further. He is excited about the opportunities ahead and the chance to explore his character in greater depth.
“I’d like to see him be a little bit more of a badass as well. I’d like to see those fighting skills, which we see a little bit with Taskmaster, but, as messed up as he is, he does have the super serum, and he knows this Russian Sambo technique, and I think we could see a lot more color in that department in terms of his range as a fighter. And I’d like to see where he can go now that he’s out of prison and he’s got more hope for his life, like who he might become. There’s a lot of potential and a lot of opportunity.”
David Harbour is Excited to Explore Red Guardian’s Future in the MCU
David Harbour shared his excitement about working with Florence Pugh, who played the character of Yelena Belova in Black Widow. In the interview, Harbour expressed his interest in exploring where Red Guardian’s story goes after the events of Black Widow and what he does after being released from prison. He is also looking forward to working with Pugh again, and their on-screen chemistry will undoubtedly be something to watch out for in the upcoming Marvel movie. Harbour also believes that his character’s inherent traits, such as his egomania and fighting spirit, can be used to create interesting and complex storylines.
“It’s so interesting to think about where [Red Guardian] ends up at the end of ‘Black Widow’ after his story is complete and what happens to him after he’s out of prison. Where does he go? To reconnect with Florence [Pugh] is going to be great as well. And also, I would like to see, because he is an idiot and he is an egomaniac – all that stuff, but he does have this fire in him, and I think he could rise to certain occasions if given the chance.”
Harrison Ford, the legendary actor best known for his roles in Indiana Jones and Star Wars, is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a major way. Ford will play General Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross in the upcoming Marvel film, Thunderbolts. In a recent interview with THR, Ford revealed that he was drawn to the role because he wanted to try something new and have some fun with his acting. Thunderbolts will bring together an all-star cast of characters, including Bucky Barnes, Ghost, U.S. Agent, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, and Taskmaster. Thaddeus Ross will be tasked with leading this diverse team of heroes and villains, which is sure to be a challenging feat.
Thunderbolts is set to begin filming this year before being released on July 26, 2024.
