“I waited my whole life to see you again. I wasn’t sure what I would feel when I did.”

Here’s the first trailer for The Marsh King’s Daughter, a chiller starring Daisy Ridley as a woman who has held a terrible secret about her past that resurfaces to wreck her present. Have a look above, and check out the key art below.

Ridley plays Helena, whose seemingly ordinary life hides a dark and dangerous truth: Her father (Mendelsohn) is the infamous Marsh King, who kidnapped her mother and kept them both captive for years in the wilderness, where Helena was born. When Dad breaks out of prison, she knows that he will hunt for her and her family, and Helena must find the strength to face her demons and outmaneuver the man who taught her everything she knows about surviving in the wild.

Helena had lied about her parents’ fate to her husband (Garrett Hedlund), who says, “I wish you had told me the truth.” We hear her say, “I think he’s coming for me” — and she’s dead right. “Now I realize that person I believed in the most was really a monster.”

Then are the faded tattoos from Helena’s youth. “This means we’re family,” Dad tells his little girl in a flashback. Fast-forward to the present and she is told: “It means owned, not family. Don’t confuse the two.”

Caren Pistorius, Brooklynn Prince and Gil Birmingham also star in the pic from Limitless and Divergent director Neil Burger. Elle Smith and Mark L. Smith penned the script based on Karen Dionne’s chilling 2017 novel.

Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions open the STXfilms/Black Bear pic October 6 in theaters.
